Ash Thorp is an illustrator, VFX artist, and creative director for feature films and commercial marketing. He works as numerous roles including the fields of concept art, animation and illustration. He originally gained recognition for his UI graphics in feature films such as Ender's Game (2013) and Total Recall (2012), and the Call of Duty series. I found his work initially through YouTube and was completely fascinated. I then began to follow his Instagram and Twitter accounts and I've been interested ever since. His work always maintains such a high standard and it is clear he is well experienced in the world of animation. Find his showreel here.
One of my favourite pieces he has made is a tribute to the 1988 film AKIRA. Titled 'AWAKEN AKIRA' he and Zaoeyo (Xialoin Zeng) collaborated on the project which acts like a trailer of sorts. It recreates some of the shots from the original into CGI. They used Cinema4D in the making of the project. Overall it took a year to make and the results are stunning, in my opinion. Although they stuck to the shots of the original film, I believe that they wholly elevated the film by creating these beautifully composed CG versions. The use of lighting and colour is like no other, in my opinion. Ash's work is definitely inspiring to me and makes me want to work like he does. He has made me want to explore Cinema4D more and attempt to create imagery as beautiful as this.
