FIGHT CLUB Artefact
For our second project of Semester Two, we were assigned the task of analysing a film each in our previous groups. My group was given the film "Fight Club" (1999), dir. by David Fincher.
The two parts of this project were as follows:
The two parts of this project were as follows:
- To create a schematic outlining the timeline of the film, focusing primarily on the main characters.
- To make an artefact of sorts, representing the themes/narratives of the film as a whole.
As a team (Matthias, Piers, Chloe and I), we decided to have a meeting to create some initial ideas. These mainly drifted towards the artefact aspect of the task, as it seemed to allow us to be quite creative. We came up with a few early concepts of what are artefact would look like/represent. Drafting ideas, we thought of making bars of soap representing each character, destroying office supplies, and even starting a fight club somehow... However we decided eventually to go with the idea of making objects out of soap. Once we got to thinking, we decided that we could model a scene from the film in Maya, made entirely out of soap. We thought it'd be a good idea to choose the Narrator's ikea furniture-filled apartment to model as this would make for a nice contrast with the soap aesthetic.
Why soap you ask?
Soap in Fight Club is a recurring symbol which features several times throughout the film. The glycerin in the soap is used by Tyler to make nitroglycerin for dynamite. In one particular scene they steal human fat from a liposuction clinic to make soap in order to "[sell] rich women's fat asses back to them". The soap is used as a symbol of cleansing. Tyler wishes to cleanse society of the materialistic upper class and their consumerist values.
