Project 4: Pencil World; TONALS

PART I

This week, Conann switched the team members of every group around again. This time, however, I was the only remaining member of the Pencil World project. Hristo, Piers, Jacob and I formed a new team. We immediately clicked and started to work well with each other. This week's task was to focus on tonal studies using 3-5 tones. It was a task that interested us all and we began to visualise how we would want the world to appear. After class we started brainstorming and sketching on the wall to make sure we were all on the same page. We were faced with a problem, however. We were unsure how each of us would be able to work together consistently on such a task. Jacob suggested that we create a storyboard depicting a typical scene that would take place in this world. We would then divide the storyboard into even amounts to work on. Piers got to writing up a few short story ideas that we could follow. So, we all got together and made a storyboard as a team with 20 panels - 5 for each of us. In terms of style, we wanted to keep things relatively simple, so we researched the art styles of Samurai Jack, Arnie Jorgensen and Eyvind Earle.

The following are some preliminary work for the finished tonal pieces:
Progress on the Wall

We made a list of things to focus on when making the tonals; such as composition, camera angle, lighting etc. For my 5 panels, I worked with shades of blue. We would show each other our progress and give each other constructive criticism on our work. I then decided to add red tones (although not part of the task, I felt it enhanced the images and i liked the contrast).

PART II

The next week's task was similar to the previous, in terms of theme. Conann wanted us to develop further the idea of tone and camera angles. We took the same approach with the storyboard ideas again and adapted one of Piers' stories into a collection of images.
