Project 1: Jellyfish World

For my first project I was grouped on a team with Ronan, Lauren and Dearbhla. We were tasked with creating the framework for a fictional world with little restricitons. After we were issued the task by ConĂ¡nn, we immediately held a team meeting in which we began to draft some initial ideas. We began by brainstorming and drawing out mindmaps, throwing out several ideas as they came to mind. My mind went straight to a sci-fi world inhabited by robotic humanoids set in a cold, icy landscape. Ronan opted for a prehistoric land full of robotic dinosaur-like creatures (maybe even incorporating a steampunk element somehow). However, after we fired out our initial creative ideas to get a train of thought going, Dearbhla brought up the idea of a world similar to “Journey”, an open-world fantasy game that she had recently been playing. We were all intrigued by her suggestion as she elaborated on what the world felt and looked like. She described it as a desolate, isolated land long forgotten by civilization. I really liked the idea of a desolate world that would not exactly have a sophisticated civilization to dominate it. As we were all on board with this lonely type of atmosphere, we then agreed to draft some sketches of how we would visualize such a world that evening.

Brainstorming Ideas

The next day we grouped together again to present our ideas to each other. I had imagined the world looking almost mars-like, being a dry and rocky planet with vast caverns and plains. The suggestion of a floating island came up after some discussion, however. We wanted to go for a more other-worldly type look to the landscape. So we agreed upon a collection of enormous levitating landmasses which would group together in clusters. From here we then began to think of who exactly would inhabit this world. After some time brainstorming we started to play around with the idea of aquatic creatures. Our aim was to create a peaceful and serene world. This led to the creation of our jellyfish race. We liked the way that jellyfish moved and their calm nature. This species would be a hyper-intelligent race of jellyfish creatures. They would not live in the sea, but in the sky. We decided that they should communicate telepathically via brain signals and transmit signals through their tentacles. They would be a peaceful race who would live in a hierarchal society wherein a tiered system would be in place regarding the floating islands. They would live harmonious lives together amongst their natural environment.

We then played around with the idea of architecture and civilisation. In order to bring an element of sea-life to the infrastructure of the world, I began to research coral reefs and sea shells. Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems. They are built by colonies of tiny animals in deep warm water. I find the structures and shapes that are exhibited in these underwater reefs to be very interesting and unique. They are quite alien-like with their unusual colours and shapes. This is primarily the reason as to why I was inspired by them to design unusual architecture for our world. I then attempted a few sketches of plant life and foliage that may be seen in the world. I drew inspiration from mollusk and clam shells. I like their visually appealing forms; for example, spirals and cones. I believe that these fit well into our idea and vision of what the architecture would look like.
